TWC has always believed that therapeutic programs such as acupuncture and meditation have a huge impact on the ways in which we have been able to help men recover.

acupunture-man-2There is overwhelming evidence that supports that both are effective treatments for addiction and the symptoms of post-acute withdrawal present in early recovery. 

When combined with conventional forms of therapy, regular weekly treatments help the men in our program manage anxiety, depression, sleeplessness, and physical pain.


Acupuncture and Addictions

Dr.Kim Graham, TCM

Kim is a Doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine and heads our Acupuncture Program. With eight years of education in Eastern and Western medicine, Dr. Graham is an expert in her field, and has hands-on experience with homelessness, addiction, and mental illness in Vancouver’s DTES and at Harbour Light. 

Kim has been facilitating acupuncture treatments for men in early recovery since 2002, and is an expert at recreating balance and alignment for the processes within the human body. They are often heavily disturbed after periods of substance abuse.

Once a state of homeostasis is reached by tapping into specific power sources throughout the body, a greater level of healing and connectivity can occur. The men who participate in acupuncture report significant improvements in their overall health and many of them choose to continue treatment well beyond the early stages to support their ongoing recovery. Men who struggle with PTSD and other concurrent mental health disorders also demonstrate significant improvement when acupuncture is introduced to their specialized treatment programs.

Weekly acupuncture sessions also provide a time for men to practice meditation and constructive reflection essential to the spiritual growth desired for successful recovery.

Meditation and Addictions

Meditation at Together We Can is introduced within the first month of a client’s treatment stay, and is an encouraged program throughout their Recovery. As a client begins to adjust to new realities, we attempt to assist them in becoming centred or grounded, as a way to cope with destructive thought patterns and unhealthy emotional states that are often present in early recovery.

meditation-can-spark-compassion-20130627We employ a number of certified counsellors and professionals that work hand-in-hand providing comprehensive therapy in the form of meditative and mindfulness techniques. Being clouded by substance misuse inhibits a person’s self-identification process.

Once a person becomes abstinent, deep spiritual healing work is required to experience a fulfilling and meaningful sobriety. Clients who regularly meditate and practice mindfulness are well-equipped to confront fears and face challenges that lie ahead in early recovery.

Together We Can’s Meditation Program encompasses a five-pillar approach.

  1. Weekly acupuncture and guided meditation sessions facilitated by Dr. TCM Kim Graham.
  2. Group counselling with a central focus on learning and utilizing meditation and mindfulness techniques.
  3. Inclusive beginner yoga classes each week which are facilitated by our certified Yoga Instructor Stefanie.
  4. Scheduled times for clients to participate in mindfulness meditation exercises facilitated by a TWC Counsellor.
  5. EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) therapy offered by Leanne Clarkson who is a Master Practitioner in Clinical Counselling.
