Art Therapy

Art therapy combines the creative process and psychotherapy, facilitating self-exploration and understanding. Using imagery, colour and shape as part of this creative therapeutic process, thoughts and feelings can be expressed that would otherwise be difficult to articulate.

Art therapy gives our clients the ability to ‘be in the moment’ and often helps to regain the sustained attention that is often lost due to the prolonged effects of addiction.

Art Therapy Program in Focus

Courtney Nichols began facilitating an Art Therapy group at Together We Can in 2013. Art Therapy is a self driven and non-directive process, so unconsciously or consciously clients are able to create what they need in the moment – not merely what others think they need. Many people recovering from addiction have difficulty maintaining focus or the ability to concentrate.

Courtney facilitates a Cognitive Behavioural Therapy group where anxiety symptoms, triggers and coping strategies are discussed. Together in a group setting, clients are able to share their experiences with anxiety and constructively come up with healthy ways to manage daily worries.

Art Therapist, Registered Clinical Counsellor

staff_courtney1Courtney Nichols obtained a Master’s degree in Art Therapy in 2003 and is a Registered Clinical Counsellor in B.C. She is also Certified Cognitive Behavioural Therapist for anxiety disorders with additional specialty training and experience working in the areas of depression, PTSD, OCD & psychosis. Often suppressed memories can play an integral role in addiction and identifying this through therapy can help unlock traumatic memories to aid in recovery.

She also uses her extensive knowledge and experience to counsel clients in Individual Mental Health Session regarding issues such as self-esteem, trauma, grief, and loss. Courtney is an expert at investigating how feelings, thoughts and behaviours are influencing an individual’s current behaviour. She helps clients find patterns of negative self-talk and identifies how they are impacting the client’s self-esteem and sense of self-worth.
